In the United States in 2007, the odds that an adult would file for bankruptcy were 1 in 207.2. By 2008, those odds had increased to 1 in 158.6. Perhaps not surprisingly, given the state’s ongoing financial turmoil, the odds that a personal bankruptcy will be filed in California are 1 in 8.47—the highest in the country.
